Hi, I am writing an article about Charlotte Rhone, the first African American Registered Nurse in NC and the US. She served as "Matron" at NCCU in the 1910-1911 school year as Matron. Is this head nurse of the infirmary? She is never listed at Lincoln Hospital. Do you have the list of employees from 1911-1912 and 1912-1913 to see if she was still the Matron? (I think she only did one year). Thank you.

Answer

Hello Phoebe,

I am not entirely certain, but I have found a document regarding the NCCU centennial that mentions "Charlotte S. Rhone, Matron, Nursing Training," as one of 17 members of the faculty that year.

Based on other titles listed in this same document, it would appear that "Matron" means that she was the head of the nursing department, while the equivalent title for men in other departments was "Dean".

I believe therefore that Charlotte S. Rhone was essentially the dean of the nursing school, which would also place her as the highest ranking female member of faculty at that time.

I will, however, forward your request to Andre Vann, our university archivist and historian for further confirmation.
